Patent Pending. This band does whatever they want and somehow always manages to pull it off.
This time? A cover album. Appropriately named Other People’s Greatest Hits. Who would have ever thought to combine Tiesto’s “Wasted” with Avicii’s “Wake Me Up?” Not me, that’s for sure. Patent Pending seems to have effortlessly combined the two to create the very first song on their album. They manage to capture the fun, party vibe of “Wasted,” while also incorporating the more-country sound for the verse from “Wake Me Up.” They also put a little bit of a more fun, modern spin on “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” originally by Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. A lot of songs were kept pretty similar to the originals, namely “Shout Out to my My Ex” and “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” The classic and timeless “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers gets a more keyboard-driven take on Other People’s Greatest Hits, while Miley Cyrus’ “See You Again” has that slight rock edge played up in its Patent Pending counterpart. In all, I wish Patent Pending did one or two more mash ups on the album, seeing how well the “Wasted / Wake Me Up” one turned out, but I’ll take what I can get, which is a fun, amusing album to jam out to on long road trips with friends.
Overall: Patent Pending put out one of the most fun albums you’ve heard.
